"I just looked at him and said, 'Your chair's pretty comfortable,'" she noted in the film. ![]() When Mitchell entered Schramm's office for the first time before she became his secretary, and eventually director of the cheerleaders, he asked her what she wanted to do in five years. Shapiro and producer Carra Greenberg both described Mitchell's ambition as akin to Peggy from AMC's "Mad Men." On the show, Peggy started as a secretary in the advertising agency and overcame the gender limitations of the late 1960s and early 1970s to eventually become copy chief. But emerging as the central character is the late Suzanne Mitchell, who started as general manager Tex Schramm's secretary and was named director of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC) in 1976. Shannon Baker Werthmann, Toni Washington and Dana Presley Killmer are among the many former cheerleaders who appear in the film. "Here is something that's so big, yet so misunderstood," Shapiro said. Half-Life: Blue Shift and Half-Life: Decay The G-Man then leaves Shephard via a portal in the cockpit, and the screen fades to the closing titles. The aircraft's location then suddenly switches to the skies of Xen, then finally to an emptiness similar to that encountered by the Black Mesa tram at the end of Half-Life. ![]() As the G-Man delivers this closing monologue, the plane carries them away from Black Mesa, shortly before a nuclear blast flashes outside confirming its destruction. The G-Man says that he has been impressed by Shephard's ability to "adapt & survive against all odds" in the Black Mesa facility and comments that these are traits that remind him of himself. The G-Man informs Shephard that, contrary to his employer's original wishes, Shephard is to be spared and detained. On this occasion, Shephard finds himself onboard one of the HECU's V-22 Ospreys, facing the G-Man. As he cannot return to the truck, the destruction of the facility became inevitable.Īfter Shephard defeats the Gene Worm at the end of the game, G-Man appears again. Later on in the chapter "The Package," the G-Man is seen rearming the nuclear bomb that eventually destroys Black Mesa, while Shephard had deactivated it moments prior. One chapter later, "We Are Pulling Out," as Shephard attempts to evacuate Black Mesa with the rest of the marines, the G-Man closes a hangar door, forcing him to remain on the base. The presence of urea in blood and confirmation of its identity with that found in urine was demonstrated in 1822 but reliable methodology for determination of the concentration of urea in blood had to wait until the early years of the 20th century. This synthesis, which was serendipitously achieved by Friedrich Wöhler in 1828, has particular significance because it marked the birth of organic chemistry and raised the first doubts about the then long-held popular belief that an undefined “vital force” was required to synthesize chemicals involved in the process of living organisms. Urea was the first organic chemical to be synthesized from inorganic chemicals. The first pure preparation of urea from urine was made in 1817 by the English physician/ chemist William Prout. Discovery of urea is credited to the Dutch physician Hermann Boerhaave who first isolated it, in impure form, from urine around 1727. The application of chemistry to medicine, from which emerged the discipline of chemical pathology (clinical chemistry) in the mid-19th century, has its origins in the early 18th century, when urine, the most readily available of body fluids, was first subjected to chemical analysis.Īs the most abundant nonaqueous constituent of urine, urea featured from the beginning of this long story. Urea owns special historical significance compared with most other analytes currently measured in the clinical laboratory or at the point of care. The second article will deal with the value of urea measurement as an adjunct to creatinine measurement the focus here will be the urea:creatinine ratio.īy way of introduction, this first article begins with a brief historical perspective. The main focus of this first article will be physiological topics, such as urea production and renal processing of urea, along with the causes of increased and reduced plasma/serum urea concentration.Ĭonsideration will also be given to the limitations of urea measurement for assessment of renal function. This is the first of two articles that together aim to explore current understanding of the clinical value of measuring serum or plasma urea concentration. It is eliminated from the body almost exclusively by the kidneys in urine, and measurement of its concentration, first in urine and later in blood, has had clinical application in the assessment of kidney (renal) function for well over 150 years. Urea is the principal nitrogenous waste product of metabolism and is generated from protein breakdown. If we keep reading in Psalm 24, we see the epic refrain: “Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in” (Psalm 24:7). Which sounds like the blameless man described in Psalm 15. And the answer, like in Psalm 15, comes in the next verse: “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully” (verse 4). Then in Psalm 24, the passage we’re looking at, the question comes again: “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?” (verse 3). But according to Psalm 15, the blameless man dwells on the hill of the Lord. So, according to Psalm 2, God’s chosen king dwells on the hill of the Lord. It’s the place where God dwells, the place of his presence - the place where he has set his king, the human ruler over his chosen people.īut then, a few pages later in Psalm 15:1, we find this question: “O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?” The answer comes in the next verse: “He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend” (Psalm 15:2–3). God’s holy hill - “the hill of the Lord” - is also called Zion. ![]() If we turn back to the very beginning of the Psalms, back to Psalm 2, we see this unmistakable declaration from God: “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill” (Psalm 2:6). In fact, this isn’t the first time we find this very question. This isn’t the first time “the hill of the Lord” is mentioned in the Psalms. It’s a simple question, but its conclusion is profound. “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?” David asks in Psalm 24:3. ![]() ![]() I obtained various useful suggestions, but none going to the root of the matter. In order, if possible, to get further light upon a discrepancy which puzzled me very much, and which, at that time, I regarded only with disgust and impatience, I published a letter in Nature inviting criticisms from chemists who might be interested in such questions. The gas obtained by the copper method, as I may call it, proved to be one-thousandth part heavier than that obtained by the ammonia method and, on repetition, that difference was only brought out more clearly. The usual method consists in absorbing the oxygen of air by means of red-hot copper and I thought that I ought at least to give that method a trial, fully expecting to obtain forthwith a value in harmony with that already afforded by the ammonia method. But then I reflected that it is always advisable to employ more than one method, and that the method I had used-Mr Vernon Harcourt's method-was not that which had been used by any of those who had preceded me in weighing nitrogen. That method is very convenient and, when I had obtained a few concordant results by means of it, I thought that the work was complete, and that the weight of nitrogen was satisfactorily determined. The excess of ammonia is subsequently absorbed with acid, and the water by ordinary desiccating agents. In its passage the oxygen of the air combines with the hydrogen of the ammonia, all the oxygen being in that way burnt up and converted into water. Air is bubbled through liquid ammonia, and then passed through a red-hot tube. In this method the oxygen of ordinary atmospheric air is got rid of with the aid of ammonia. ![]() It was not until after that lecture that I turned my attention to nitrogen and in the first instance I employed a method of preparing the gas which originated with Mr Vernon Harcourt, of Oxford. I must take that as known, merely mentioning that it is substantially the same as is used by all investigators nowadays, and introduced more than fifty years ago by Regnault. It is not necessary, therefore, that I should trouble you to-night with any detail as to the method by which gases can be accurately weighed. It is some three or four years since I had the honour of lecturing here one Friday evening upon the densities of oxygen and hydrogen gases, and upon the conclusions that might be drawn from the results. We will see the placement of argon and its family of elements proposed in the next chapter. It is appropriate to consider the discovery of argon among papers about the periodic system, because the atomic weight of argon and its properties were such that there seemed no place for it in the periodic system of the time. The story of that discovery is recounted here in the transcript of a lecture for interested laypersons at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, where he was Professor of Natural Philosophy. He received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1904 for his role in the discovery of argon.
